We build a better future

Our projects improve the quality of life for people in Europe and beyond

The EU bank

The EIB is the European Union’s bank, the only bank owned by and representing the interests of the EU Member States.

We work closely with other EU institutions to implement and realise EU policy, but we are also a bank – in fact the world’s largest multilateral borrower and lender.

We raise the bulk of our lending resources ourselves, through bond issues on the international capital markets. Our AAA rating allows us to borrow at advantageous rates, and, as a non-profit-maximising bank, we are able to offer good terms onto our clients.

Our priorities

We provide finance and expertise for sustainable investment projects that contribute to EU policy objectives, primarily in Europe (90+% of our activity) but also around the world, with a focus on four priority areas: innovation and skills, access to finance for smaller businesses, environment and climate, and infrastructure.

We are the European Commission’s partner in the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), an initiative to help overcome the current investment gap in Europe, with the aim of mobilising private investment in projects which are strategically important for the EU.

What makes the EIB different?

We work hard to be accountable to EU citizens. The projects we finance must not only be bankable but must also comply with strict economic, technical, environmental and social standards. Our Bankers (known internally as Loan or Investment Officers) are responsible for the financial aspects of our projects, and work closely with our in-house engineers and economists, who screen every project according to these standards, before, during and after lending.

The Operations Directorate (Ops)

Ops is home to our front office lending and investing activities. Ops officers originate new business and manage client relationships, perform financial and business due diligence on project proposals, develop appropriate financing structures, and lead both negotiations with the clients and also the internal approval process, in conjunction with our technical, legal and credit risk experts.

The Officer therefore has an A to Z role, fundamental to the achievement of the Bank’s objectives.

Why work for the EIB?

By joining the EIB as an Ops Officer, you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of projects fostering Europe’s growth, within an institution with c 60 years of history and alongside c 3,000 specialist staff, motivated by the contribution they are making.

We offer a friendly, professional and stimulating work environment, where people can achieve their professional goals, while maintaining work-life balance, with excellent professional development opportunities through training, internal mobility and merit-based career growth.

Our base in Luxembourg, home to many EU institutions and international businesses, offers a welcoming and inclusive, multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment, with a high standard of safety and living,

“Good for people – Good for Business”

As the bank of the EU, we are committed to EU objectives and values. We promote and value diversity and inclusion, and believe that a blend of genders, ages, EU nationalities, races, cultures, educational backgrounds and experiences, religious beliefs, sexual orientations or disabilities, is essential to the success and development of the Bank, and reflects Europe itself.

To further our diversity efforts, we particularly encourage women and candidates with disabilities, who are EU member state nationals, to apply.
